AWESOME QUOTE!!

“If I were not a Catholic, and were looking for the true Church in the world today, I would look for the one Church which did not get along well with the world; in other words, I would look for the Church which the world hates. My reason for doing this would be, that if Christ is in any one of the churches of the world today, He must still be hated as He was when He was on earth in the flesh. If you would find Christ today, then find the Church that does not get along with the world. Look for the Church that is hated by the world, as Christ was hated by the world. Look for the Church which is accused of being behind the times, as Our Lord was accused of being ignorant and never having learned. Look for the Church which men sneer at as socially inferior, as they sneered at Our Lord because He came from Nazareth. Look for the Church which is accused of having a devil, as Our Lord was accused of being possessed by Beelzebub, the Prince of Devils. Look for the Church which the world rejects because it claims it is infallible, as Pilate rejected Christ because he called Himself the Truth. Look for the Church which amid the confusion of conflicting opinions, its members love as they love Christ, and respect its voice as the very voice of its Founder, and the suspicion will grow, that if the Church is unpopular with the spirit of the world, then it is unworldly, and if it is unworldly, it is other-worldly. Since it is other-worldly, it is infinitely loved and infinitely hated as was Christ Himself. … the Catholic Church is the only Church existing today which goes back to the time of Christ. History is so very clear on this point, it is curious how many miss its obviousness…”

BANDOLIERS IN LITURGICAL COLORS?

Fr. Z over at WDTPRS had THIS to say about a question sent in by one of his readers:

I have a question for you. Suppose during a EF Mass, a gunman or threatening person enters the church, and opens fire. What can be done within the rubrics to protect the Blessed Sacrament, the priest, the servers, and the congregation? Please keep in mind that the congregation is made up of slow, aging men, who no offense to them, really can’t protect anyone.

Read the comments, as well!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MICHAEL!!!

DIL1 already set the theme so here's a continuation... Nothing like the original:

Happy Birthday, Michael!!

DECEMBER TO REMEMBER (NOT THE LEXUS ONE)

December is always a busy month for everyone, and Linda and I are no exception.  Just birthdays alone are enough to keep us busy.  We have birthdays on December 3rd (Linda turned 23 yet again!), December 10 marks H1's entry onto the world scene, December 16th is yours truly's b'day, of course the birth of our Lord and Savior on the 25th, and SIL-O on December 31st.  Now we've added H2F (formerly H2GF) on December 27th! Whew!!

Then there's the Covington Craft Fair which always falls on Linda's birthday weekend, so we take that Friday off to go to the fair.  This year it was just the two of us.  In past years Aunt Bev and Uncle Mick, and DLG would go, too.  Those of you who follow me on Twitter or Facebook already know that this year was especially nice because... why???... because they had CRACKLINs!!!  Oh, my, yes!!  Yummy!

If all that wasn't enough, add to the mix a trip to Orlando/Tampa to attend SIL-O's graduation from USF with a Master's Degree in Nursing.  That is this weekend coming, so we'll be heading that way on Friday, with a scheduled return to NOLA on Monday.

And finally, I'm scheduled to preach three out of four weekends this month!  Whew!  The New Year can't come to quickly if you ask me!!

There's still plenty of time for some good Advent self-reflection and preparation, though.  Keeping in mind that Jesus is the reason for the season, Advent is a time to ask ourselves if we are truly prepared, that is, in a right state of mind and spirit to meet and greet the savior of the world.  A popular hymn/song nowadays in many Catholic churches goes, "They'll Know We Are Christians By Our Love".  If we were to meet Jesus at His second coming this month, or this week, or today, could we truly say that we are living up to His commandment to love one another?

The Christmas season brings out the best in most of us.  We are filled with a spirit of giving, and take joy in bringing smiles to the faces of our family and friends with that perfect gift, or in sharing a bountiful table of delicious treats...  But as Christians, do we let this spirit of love and giving extend beyond our tight circles of family and friends to those less fortunate?  Do we "feed the hungry, clothe the naked, give drink to the thirsty, or visit the sick and imprisoned", especially during this season?  With all the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping, and parties and visiting, can't we take time out to pick up a couple of blankets, or some bags of socks, or a sweater or two, and donate them to a local homeless shelter?  Giving with no thought of getting, now THAT is the spirit of Christmas!!

God bless you, and may your Christmas be Happy, healthy, and filled with LOVE for Jesus, and for one another!!

SO THERE!!

Filled as it is with hopes, struggles, worries, uncertainty and sometimes sadness and disappointment, raising children can be quite a challenge.  So much so that sometimes we wonder why in the world would anyone want to have a child, much less more than one!

This is why:

Because without children, you don't get grandchildren!!

LET'S TALK TURKEY

As Thanksgiving looms, I find myself reflecting on what I am most thankful for this year.

I am, of course, thankful for my loving wife of 40 years, whose constant faith, love and support are what has brought meaning and purpose into my life.  I am also thankful for four beautiful children.  If anyone has "made us proud", they have!  I am especially grateful that my kids have grown into adults that are (mostly) compassionate, loving, and kind, and who have been blessed with equally wonderful spouses/fiancé for whom I am also thankful.  And the grandkids!  We mustn't forget the grandkids!! What a joyful blessing they are!

I am also thankful for my extended family: brother and brothers-in law, sisters and sisters-in-law and all the (grand)nieces and (grand)nephews.

I'm thankful for the quirky sense of humor that is so prevalent in our family.  We are fun to be around, if I do say so myself!

I'm thankful for friends who are more like family, friends like Bob and Helen, Keith and Chris, Mick and Bev (listed alphabetically by male so as not to show preference), and for friends who have made life so interesting and fun, like Big J and Janet, Young Wade, Dr. Bob... the list goes on and on.

I'm thankful for the many "men of God" who have been influential in my life in so many ways: Fr. John Licari (RIP), Fr. Seiler, Fr. John Arnone, Fr. Deo, Fr. Godfrey, Fr. Daniel, Fr. Andrew... again the list goes on and on!

I'm thankful for my faith, for a God who is willing to look beyond my many faults and failings and allow me to serve Him and His Church.  It is to Him that I pray constantly for a return of unity and harmony within our family.  To Him be Honor, Power, and Glory, now and forever!

Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.

GUITAR HERO

Got this in an email from my brother in OH.  Thanks, Bill, this is hilarious!!

A musician named Dave Carroll recently had difficulty with United Airlines. United apparently damaged his treasured Taylor guitar ($3500) during a flight. Dave spent over 9 months trying to get United to pay for damages caused by baggage handlers to his Custom Taylor guitar.

During his final exchange with the United Customer Relations Manager, he stated that he was left with no choice other than to create a music video for YouTube exposing their lack of cooperation. The Manager responded: "Good luck with that one, pal."

So he posted a retaliatory video on YouTube. The video has since received over 5.5 million hits. United Airlines contacted the musician
and attempted settlement in exchange for pulling the video. Naturally his response was: "Good luck with that one, pal."

Taylor Guitars sent the musician 2 new custom guitars in appreciation for product recognition from the video that has lead to a sharp increase in orders.

After the amazing response to his first video, here is his follow-up.

I COULD NOT HAVE SAID IT BETTER*

* (my emphasis in bold, my comments in red)

"What does it mean, really, to be a Catholic? After all, being a Catholic has to mean something, right?

Being a Catholic means that you’re part of a faith community that possesses a clearly defined authority and doctrine, obligations and expectations. It means that you believe AND accept the teachings of the Church, especially (but not only) on essential matters of faith and morals; that you belong to a local Catholic community, a parish; that you attend Mass on Sundays and receive the sacraments regularly; that you support the Church, personally, publicly, spiritually and financially." - Bishop Thomas J. Tobin, Bishop of Providence, RI

MY HEART CAN'T TAKE IT!!!

8 and 0, BABY!!  The Saints are 8 and 0!!  They've got to quit spotting the other team a couple of touchdowns, though.  It's not good for my blood pressure!

It was a really good weekend.  Gave a homily on FAITH at all the masses.  Fr. Deo was the presider at the 8AM Mass.  It's always great to see him!  Looks like he'll be off to Rome in the next few weeks to give his doctoral dissertation.  We wish him success.

After lunch we were surprised when Ian walked in the door.  He had walked all the way to the Point from his house!  So we drove him back, and had a nice visit with DLG and kids.  BB nailed the riding a two-wheeler while we were there, with G'ma's help.  Got to say "Hi" to MD, Jack and the Dirty Mexican, too!

Next comes two two-day weeks (Wednesday is a holiday).  Life is GOOD (mostly).

WEEKEND UPDATE

Today is the Commemoration of All Souls. "
Death is then no cause for mourning, for it is the cause of mankind's salvation. Death is not something to be avoided, for the Son of God did not think it beneath his dignity, nor did he seek to escape it." - St. Ambrose

It turned out to be quite a weekend, with everyone every which way. Friday saw H1/DIL1 arrive from Houston after a 6-hour trip that dragged on into 8 hours due to bad weather. Saturday Linda had a special Mass and breakfast with Catholic Daughters. Fr. Deo was supposed to preside at the Mass, but he is down with the flu (so please pray for his speedy recovery). DLG, DIL1, H2GF and Ian all went to the Garden District Bookstore to meet Charlaine Harris, author of the Southern Vampire (think True Blood, Sookie Stackhouse, (Eric if you must))series and have some books signed. Meanwhile MD, H1 and H2 went to Voodoo Fest. DIL1 and H2GF joined the guys after the book signing was over.

Linda and I attended Mass Saturday evening. Saturday night Linda and DLG took witch BB and vampiress Molly-moo trick-or-treating in the Point. Both girls were just adorable!!

Sunday morning I upgraded Linda's laptop to Windows 7, 'cause I was bored.  Then, before H1/DIL1 hit the road, we all gathered at Fujihana for a sushi lunch.

All in all, a nice weekend, but short. Looking forward to H1/DIL1's next visit!!

THE SLIPPERY SLOPE *

* From Fr. Longenecker's awesome blog!

Here is how Satan spreads his lies:

1. Natural Law is ignored, undermined or made to look stupid by particular instances where it seems not apply.
2. Subsequently religious and civil authorities have their laws questioned because they are 'too strict' too 'black and white', 'unworkable' or 'lacking in compassion'.
3. Relativism is therefore introduced. An understanding gradually grows that 'there are no objective rule' that apply to all people at all times.
4. Individualism is the next step. 'I guess I have to decide what is right for me in my situation.'
5. Sentimentalism: People who live in a sinful situation demand that they not be judged. They deserve compassion and understanding. They are nice people really...but they have a problem. They're sick. They're wounded. Who are you to judge?
6. Dialogue is demanded. "You need to listen to us and to our stories. Then you will understand we are just like you."
7. Once sympathy is won, the goalposts are moved. Now they are not 'sick' or 'wounded' they're just 'different'. They expect to be accepted despite their 'differences'.
8. Equal rights are expected by those who are acting against God's law. "We are not asking you to approve us. We are simply asking you to tolerate a difference of opinion. Simply allow us to be who we are!"
9. Equal rights are demanded. Legislation and lobbying and protests are now in order. The pressure group for sin starts to get aggressive. They do so out of 'hurt' and 'woundedness.' Once they get their 'rights' (they claim) they will be happy and won't be so aggressive.
10. Tolerance being won, they will not stop. They now demand not only that you tolerate, but that you approve. They've moved from being 'sick' or 'wounded' or 'disabled' by their condition to tolerance, and now they proclaim their condition to be 'good'. As Thomas More was not allowed to remain silent on the King's 'great matter' but had to approve, so the presssure group insists on approval.
11. What was once tolerated now becomes mandatory. Society must integrate the new morality into every level--right down to schools and churches and scout groups. Everyone must adopt the new morality or suffer.
12. Persecution of those who resist.
13. Devil's real happy.

This process happens on an individual level, a family level, a community level and a societal level. The bigger the level the longer it takes, and for it to take effect at the societal, community and family level it must first work on the individual level.

This means you and I must watch for the signs in our own moral life and be alert. Any of us can go down this path, and any of us may be victims of those who are already well down the path of evil and darkness.

SAINTS SWEEP NY!!!

The SAINTS welcomed home native son Eli Manning and the New York Giants by thoroughly trouncing them,48 - 27, making it a clean sweep of the Bills, Jets, and Giants!! GEAUX SAINTS!!

That surely capped off a good weekend. Preached at three masses, talked about our being called to service and linked it into the World Mission Sunday theme. Not too difficult when you think of the services rendered over the years by Catholic missionaries, not only in other parts of the world, but right here in Louisiana!

Heading back to work tomorrow with a bonus... Kenny has a job interview at our place of work. It looks like there is a contract coming in the very near future so interviews are being conducted ahead of time to prepare to bring new people on board as soon as the contract is signed. Please offer a prayer for Kenny that his interview goes well!

Did I mention that the Saints are 5 - 0???

AN EXCELLENT WEEKEND

What a great weekend!! Saturday started with a picnic in City Park. Linda and I were invited to an "engagement picnic" for Stephanie and Shane, a couple getting married next June. I've been asked to perform the wedding! Later we went over to MD/DLG's for dinner. Major Dad barbecued hamburgers, hot dogs, sausages, eggplant, mushrooms and made an awesome pasta salad. Then we watched as Florida brought it to LSU in Death Valley. At least LSU hung in there and kept the game respectable!

Sunday we went to Mass, which is always great! Then KenEllie stopped by for a short visit. At 4 we were at the Omni Royal Orleans hotel for a very nice dinner with the Archdiocese of New Orleans diaconate community (deacons, wives, candidates and wives, and aspirants and wives) to meet and welcome our new archbishop, Greg Aymond. He is from New Orleans, but spent the past nine years as Bishop of Austin, Tx. Welcome home, Archbishop Aymond!! It was really great to see so many of my brother deacons and their wives!

Today, being Columbus Day, is a fed holiday, so Linda and I are off. Woo-hoo!! Looking forward to a quiet day, with an occasional break from the rain. Happy Columbus Day to all, and sorry, if you have to work today!!

October 5, 2009

ANOTHER HAPPY MONDAY

SAINTS are 4 - 0 and Tigers are 5 - 0!!

Made it through all 3 masses without any tomatoes or eggs being tossed at me!

Got this from my friend "Meatball". I might have to use it in a homily some day:
One evening a Cherokee elder told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all.

“One is Evil - It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

"The other is Good - It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: "Which wolf wins?"

The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

A good question to ask ourselves every day. Which are we feeding?

God Bless!!
This is a test from my mobile.

'NUFF SAID

It was a good weekend for several reasons. Let's see, where to begin...

Saturday KenEllie, Linda and I went across the lake to "the Abbey" (St. Joseph's Abbey) to visit the gift shop. We bought an awesome set of windchimes that will hang in our currently non-existent (except in our minds) gazebo.

Then, Saturday evening Linda and I went over to MD/DLG's to celebrate Molly-moo's birthday. It's hard to believe that she's three already!! Where does the time go?

Then Sunday after Mass I had the privilege of baptizing little Chloe Grace... she was SO cute! Until they asked the deacon to hold her for a picture. Oh, no! Not going to the guy who poured water on her head!! Not gonna happen!

Let's see... oh, yeah:

LSU 4 - 0!! Geaux Tigers!

Saints 3 - 0!! Who DAT!!

And I almost forgot, Tulane won their game, too! Roll Wave!

September 25, 2009

I LOVE THIS!!!

Hat tip to Big J... I couldn't find the picture he sent, so I had to make my own!

SPIRITUALLY REFRESHED!

What a week! Went on retreat to the Lumen Christi retreat center in Shriever, Louisiana, in the Diocese of Houma/Thibodaux... It was excellent!! It was a couples' retreat for deacons of both the Archdiocese of New Orleans and the Diocese of Houma/Thibodaux, and their wives. Since two dioceses were represented we had two retreat directors, Bishop Sam Jacobs of Houma/Thibodaux and Bishop Shelton Fabre of New Orleans. It was definitely a spiritually fulfilling weekend. Apparently the weekend was so well received that it will be an annual event beginning next year!

Little Molly-Moo is THREE!! Where has the time gone? Happy Birthday, Molly!!!

One of my boys has become a casualty of the recession. His job was "down-sized" away on Friday. Rumors had it going away in December, but the ax fell much sooner. Please pray that he will be able to find employment quickly!

Although we aren't getting rain the likes of what Georgia is experiencing, we're getting enough to make it difficult to ride on a regular basis. What a drag!! I'm in desperate need of wind in my hair and bugs in my teeth!OK... wind in the hair of my beard, anyway!

And oh, how 'bout them Saints?!?!?! Looking pretty good, so far!

Big J, I've been getting your emails and lovin' 'em! Enjoying all your photos on facebook, as well! Keep on enjoying that retirement! It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it!

Take care, everyone and God bless!

NOW CUT THAT OUT!!

ABC Meme

It seems that I’ve been tagged by DLG (Patti) at Book Addict.

Here are the rules:
1. Link to the person who tagged you.
2. Share your ABC s.
3. Tag three people at the end by linking to their blogs.
4. Let the three tagged people know they have been tagged.
5. Do not tag the same person repeatedly but try to tag different people, so there is a big network of bloggers doing this tag.

Available or single? I have to agree with DLG who said, “This question makes no sense...It's like asking if the car I drive has a manual or a standard transmission.”

Best Friend? Without a doubt the love of my life, Linda!

Cake or Pie? Devil’s food cake with vanilla frosting! (Although I do love me some pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving.)

Drink of choice? Harvey’s Bristol Cream on the rocks

Essential item for every day use? My laptop, of course! :-)

Favorite Color? Blue, all shades, but sky and midnight mostly.

Google? Of course, is there anything else? (Rhetorical question, no need to answer)

Hometown? Born in Leaksville (Now called Eden) North Carolina, but grew up in Binghamton, Canton, Binghamton, Norwich, Binghamton, all in New York. Oh yes, a brief time spent in Warren Center, PA. Still, I call Binghamton “home”.

Indulgences? Music, TV/Movies and (unfortunately) food!

January or February? What’s wrong with the other months? I’m kinda partial to December. After all, it is my birthday month.

Life is incomplete without? Linda. And family. And God. And music.

Marriage date? July 5th.

Number of siblings? Five of the awesomest (is that even a word?) sibs in the world!!

Oranges or apples? I guess “six of one, half dozen of the other”. Depends on what I’m in the mood for.

Phobias and fears? Tornadoes. No doubt about it. My biggest fear.

Quote for the day? “I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. I just wish that He didn't trust me so much.” – Mother Teresa

Reason to smile? So many!! My kids! My kids chosen companions! My grandkids! Getting to baptize babies! Getting to witness marriages! And… DLG’s and DIL1’s blogs always bring a smile!

Season? That would have to be the one week of spring and the one week of fall we get here in New Orleans… fair weather, mild temps, and low humidity.

Tag 3 people? DIL1, H1 and Mandi.
Unknown fact about me? I fenced epée on the SUNY Maritime College fencing team.

Vegetable you hate? I have no idea what vegetables YOU hate, but I hate lima beans. Oh, and rutabaga.

Worst habit? I stick my tongue out when I’m concentrating.

X -rays you’ve had? Again, I don’t know what x-rays you’ve had, but I’ve had many, many, many. Mostly dental, some chest.

Zodiac sign? Sagittarius (the Archer)

KEEP THE ROUND ON THE GROUND!

It was a short, but very satisfactory visit with S2. Tuesday evening we arrived earlier than expected, so Linda, H2F, S2 and I went to Taqueria Jalisco for some excellent AUTHENTIC Mexican fare. Even the coke is bottled in Mexico! Ah-h-h, the taste always brings back memories of the coke of my youth!

Yesterday Linda, S2 and I had brunch at Aunt Leni's restaurant in the "Pernt". Dinner was Outback with KenEllie, H2, H2F, Linda and S2. Those who had 'em (motorcycles, that is) rode 'em. Dessert was stopping by to see DLG, Ian, and BB. MD was on a detail, so we missed him, and Molly-moo was already asleep.

Today S2 is on her way to Tupelo, MS, via the Natchez Trace. If our weather in NOLA is any indication she should be having an excellent trip. I hope her weather luck holds for the rest of her journey home.

It's hard to believe that S2 has only been riding motorcycles for a little over a year, and has made this amazing trip! Once it gets in your blood... Pretty amazing gal, if you ask me!

And I would certainly be grossly remiss if I didn't give a shout out to nephew David on his return to Huntington Beach, CA, after biking from Owego, NY, across country. If you haven't already, you can follow his journey at The Polio Ride '09. Give it a look. An awesome achievement!!

August 26, 2009

BIG D, LITTLE A, DOUBLE L, A, S

Well, I did it! Rode up to Dallas on Sunday, met up with S2 on Monday. We had a nice (WAY to short) visit with Tim and Kristen, then returned with S2 to New Orleans yesterday. The weather was just about perfect... no rain, not excessively hot, and no traffic jams, accidents, delays. Just a perfect ride each way.

Today we are spending quiet time around the house, mostly blogging, emailing, etc., then dinner with family tonight at Outback.

Tomorrow S2 heads out on the rest of her trip through the Natchez Trace, Nashville, and on back to PA. Linda and I will, of course, head back to work. (insert frown-y face here).

It was great to see S2, and to get a chance to ride wtih her!!

Looking forward to the next time!!

KUDOS GALORE!!!

I guess I must face up to the fact that I belong to a most amazing family!

My daughter, who authors a most interesting blog, is also an avid reader. As such, she has started a new blog, Book Addict, at which she reviews books as she finishes. Both blogs are, thanks to DIL1, visually attractive and, coupled with DLG's flair for writing, lots of fun to read. Give them a look!!

My younger sister (actually ALL my sisters are younger), Sara, is going to a women's motorcycle convention in Denver, CO. She is riding her motorcycle from Pennsylvania to Denver, then from Denver to Dallas, to New Orleans, and finally back to PA! What an adventure! I wish I could join her for the whole trip, but at least I'm trying to meet up with her in Dallas to ride back to NOLA.

My sis-in-law in Orlando, who started her program long, LONG, after I did, will be getting her Masters Degree in Nursing this December!! Way to GO, Mags!!

My nephew, David, is in the middle (actually just passed middle) of a bicycle ride across the U.S. to raise money and awareness for the fight to totally eradicate polio! He started in Owego, NY, and is biking all the way to Huntington Beach, CA. You can follow his progress at The Polio Ride '09. He is up to day 22, I think. If you are so inclined, you can also make a donation HERE.

Everywhere I turn my children, my siblings, my nieces and nephews, my in-laws, they are an inspiration to me! I am so proud, and at the same time, humble, to be related to them!

REALITY BYTES

By now you have probably seen the video of the wedding "procession" wherein the entire wedding party dances, whirls and gyrates to the front of the church. I was initially somewhat taken aback when I first saw it. Then I thought, "well, maybe because I am a fairly frequent 'officiant' at weddings I'm a little more easily, well, shocked is probably too strong a word, but my reaction was less than favorable." This by Red Cardigan at And Sometimes Tea puts it into a much better perspective than I ever could. I hope I can remember what she says the first time a bride-to-be confronts me with plans to dance down the aisle!

MY WEEKEND HOMILY

I’ve noticed that often, when attending a class or training session of some kind, the professor or instructor will begin the class by asking the students what they expect to get out of the class or training session. What is it, going in, that we expect to take with us?

Perhaps some of us here today might be season ticket holders for the Saints, or the Hornets, or the Zephyrs. As we are purchasing our tickets, what are our expectations? We might expect to see our teams win most of their games.

Did you ever go to see a movie, and when asked about it afterward reply, “Well, it wasn’t what I expected.”

Expectations.

Our Gospel reading today tells us that a crowd of more than 5000 followed Jesus. As he crossed the lake in a boat, they hurried around on foot to be there when he arrived on the other shore. Can you imagine if someone left Metairie in a small sailboat heading to Mandeville and a crowd of 5000 people hurried, on foot, around Lake Pontchartrain to be there when it arrived?

Why were these people following Jesus? What were their expectations? Some, as we are told in the Gospel, have heard that Jesus is a miracle worker, and expect to see a miracle for themselves. Others, perhaps, have heard that he is a powerful preacher, and expect to hear words of wisdom when he speaks. Still others might follow just to see what the “hubbub” is about, with no particular expectations other than to have their curiosity satisfied.

As it turns out, those whose expectation included seeing a miracle were not disappointed. We read about how Jesus fed the 5000 with only five barley loaves and 2 fish, and afterward twelve wicker baskets of leftover “fragments” were collected. I can’t help but wonder, though, if I had been there, even expecting some sort of miracle, had I not been paying attention would I have missed it? Would I have realized that a mere five loaves of bread and 2 fish had fed such a vast multitude?

Expectations.

What are our expectations when we come to Mass each week? Do we expect to encounter a miracle? Do we expect to hear words of wisdom? Or do we just come along, like always, because “it’s what we’re supposed to do”?

Standing in the back of church before Mass, I couldn’t help but look at the beautiful stained glass windows over the altar, and at the high, arched ceiling overhead. Many churches are built in this fashion. But do we ever stop and wonder why?

The beautiful windows and high ceilings are intended to draw us out of ourselves, to draw our attention “upward” to God, the almighty, the awesome creator of everything that is. It is our feeble human attempt to move us, focus us, and propel us up, away from and above ourselves as we worship the Lord.

Yes, we are gathered, not only as a community, but as a community united in WORSHIP of this awesome, almighty God. We worship Him with songs, and prayers, and attitude, and action! We worship Him, who came down to us, who humbled Himself to be born a man, who we then tortured and killed on a cross. We worship Him, who rose from the dead, and now present on the altar, provides us with spiritual nourishment, and seeks to guide us ever upward to our Father in heaven!

As Catholics we “know” that a miracle does, indeed, take place. We know that Jesus Christ becomes truly present on the altar. But are we paying attention? Are we aware of the miracle that has taken place? Do we receive Him with the respect and attention that He deserves?

And when we receive Him, we truly become one Body in Christ. And as Catholics, as Christians, we are obligated to share that body, to BE Christ to those around us.

As Jesus said in the Gospel today, “gather all the fragments together so that nothing is wasted.” I submit to you that the poor, the hungry, the homeless, the helpless in our city, in our society, these are the “fragments” that WE must gather to ensure that they are not wasted! It is our duty to care for them, to be Christ for them, in whatever manner we are able, be it through prayer, or with charitable donations of money, or food, or clothing.

We will return to Mass next week, and the week after, and the week after that. What will be our expectations? Will we expect to see a miracle? Will we pay attention to that miracle? Will we share that miracle with others?

A PATCHWORK OF THOUGHTS

Linda will be away for a few days, once again, this time to South Carolina. But no need to worry, I won't starve, thanks to Dr. Boli's Celebrated Magazine. Of course, after reading it Linda may not want to come home...

I've "got the duty" this weekend, as Big J would say. That is, it's my homily weekend so I'll be doing the preaching at all the masses at our parish. As an added bonus we're also doing baptisms after 11:00 AM mass on Sunday.

H2 starts working 12 hour shifts this weekend. It's part of the NOPD push to get more officers on the streets during the summer months. It'll make for some long days, but the pay should be good.

Fr. Deo is in New Orleans "for the foreseeable future"!! We're excited! Can hardly wait to get together. It is always such a pleasure to be with him. Once he's totally finished with his PhD studies in Rome he will be returning to NOLA to teach at the seminary.

Having been to Uganda twice, I can say with some certainty that electrical power is an "on again/off again" affair. Fr. Godfrey, who is in Uganda, is trying to install solar panels in the rectory of his new parish. He has it mostly done, but is about $900 short of completing the project. Linda has begun fundraising efforts, and has a pledge of $200 from one of the Catholic women's groups in the parish. If anyone would like to contribute $1, or $5, or $10... let us know. We will accept all donations, and consolidate into one large gift for Fr. Godfrey's parish. I would also encourage prayers for the success of his project.

Maynard is a really sweet dog. Lately he's been demanding a lot of attention, though. He can't seem to get enough "lovin'". I think he might be a little bit spoiled.

Got to run now. It's almost lunch time and we're going to the Mediterranean Cafe on N. Carrollton Avenue. Hoping for some good baba ganoush!!

Update:Mediterranean Cafe was closed. We went to Mona's Restaurant instead.

Take care, and God bless!!

WHY CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG?????

Thanks to DIL1, I've come to the conclusion that the world would be a much better place if everyone would practice the art of resarciation. I, myself, would like to resarciate for any bruised egos, hurt feelings, toes trod upon as a result of any insensitivity on my part. Mea Culpa!!!

THIS SPACE AVAILABLE*

* cause I can't think of a title.

I've been REALLY bad about blogging, I know. I finished my last paper for what might be my last class and I seem to have just kind of shut down. Relief!! After some much needed respite I have to begin preparing for the comprehensive exams, which is the last step. If successful I will have my Masters in Theology. So... you want fries with that?

H2 got pulled over yesterday on Carrollton Ave in his new truck with its newly "limo" tinted windows. The cop told him he had pulled him over because he couldn't see a license plate (he has a temporary plate taped to the inside of the back window) and that his tint was too dark. H2 told him that he had ordered it (the tint) that way. When asked for his license and registration he pulled out his wallet with his badge on it and made sure that it was visible. Upon seeing the badge the cop asked him if he was NOPD, to which he replied, "Yes". Then the cop asked him what district he was assigned. After he answered, the copy said, "have a good day." And that was that. Must be nice!!

A very Happy Birthday to Ian. We went over to MD/DLG's for dinner. It was awesome! Burgers, spicy dogs and sausages, corn on the cob, and cous cous. Delish! For desert was a doberge cake with candles that kept relighting. That was good for a lot of chuckles as Ian, BB and Molly all tried to blow them out! There was chocolate/vanilla ice cream to go with the cake. It was good to see Dan, and Rich and Michelle again.

Linda was in San Diego for a class the week before last. She arrived home on Friday at just about the middle of rush hour, so we took advantage of the traffic to meet up with KenEllie in Kenner for dinner at Olive Garden. It was a nice welcome home for Linda, I think. That Wednesday I had met KenEllie and Ellie's mom and dad at Mo's for pizza. Her folks are great and we don't get to see them often enough!

This past week Linda and I went to Fujihana for sushi. Whenever we go now the manager always comes by several times to greet us and to see if everything is all right, and some of the wait staff stop by to chat, even though they aren't our server that evening. Do you think we eat there too often?

That's about it for tonight. Got to get some beauty sleep. Take care and God bless!

TOO FUNNY NOT TO SHARE

This from my daughter's blog:

DLG: The creepy kid in this book I'm reading is named Bridget.
MD: The creepy kid in our house is named Bridget.

Ian: I think my leg is God punishing me for being bad.
DLG: Nah, that was the Old Testament God.
Ian: Yeah, He was a smiter of smitees.

THANKS FOR A GREAT DAY!!!

Thanks to everyone for a great Father's Day!

A special thanks to KenEllie for the coffee mug! It expresses my sentiments to a "T"!

Thanks also to DLG and MD for the great dinner at Fuji Hana!!

And also to H1/DIL1 who, totally ignoring the Herrick's famous 15-minute rule, made sure I received my Father's day card in a most timely fashion!! I'm looking forward to the Thanksgiving card, tomorrow?!?!

All in all it was a fabulous day. Well, with the possible exception of the olives.

THE BELLS ARE RINGING...

Wedding bells, that is... For all my "peeps" who either aren't on Facebook or don't read it frequently, H2/H2F's wedding is set for July 24, 2010, at 5PM, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Del Rio, TX. Some of the festivities will be in Mexico (Del Rio is a border town) so (DIL1 stop reading here!) get those passports ready!!

NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS... UPDATE FROM NOLA

An update from the NOLA Westbank deacon…

KenEllie are getting ready for their Disney vacation. They leave tomorrow for a week in and around the Magic Kingdom. We’ll miss them while they’re gone. Praying for them a safe and happy trip!

H2 is doing pretty well in his new role as protector of the populace! In his first three weeks he has seen three dead bodies (all non-violent, unless you call a bridge jumper violent), arrested several people during traffic stops, and had to draw his weapon a couple of time (no shots fired!). And, if I do say so myself, he looks absolutely GREAT in uniform!

H1/DIL1 are heading in at the end of the month, and we can hardly wait!! While here we will get the whole family together to celebrate our (Linda’s and mine) 40th wedding anniversary. AND, H1/DIL1 will also be having their marriage blessed in the Church! By yours truly!

Saturday last, we had dinner with DLG, Major Dad and kids. It was great to get together again, and Ditali’s Pizza is always a favorite. The kids are doing great. Ian is dealing with his injury as best he can, with physical therapy twice a week, and working out with MD in between. BB misses school already. Molly is just busy being cute as a button! DLG is eagerly awaiting the start of the new season of True Blood on HBO.

Thanks a HUGE bunch to H2 for taking the valkyrie to the Honda shop for maintenance, and to MD for picking it up for me! Linda and I have ridden to work twice this week!! Hopefully tomorrow, too!

I guess summer’s about over for me… :-( I’ve enrolled in “Vatican II: Continuity and Development” at Notre Dame Seminary’s Summer Theological Institute. It will count toward completing my Master’s in Theology. I’m pretty excited, as this course should help in understanding what VCII really intended in the way of reform, and where and why it all went awry, if indeed it did. Good stuff!!

I’m also easing into the routine of preaching twice a month at my parish, at the request of my pastor. I just wish it would get easier, but after 10 years it hasn’t, so I’m not holding my breath!

And just a gentle reminder to family… passports… Pasaportes… PASSPORTS!!... ¡Hurra, Mexico en julio de 2010.

God's blessings to all!! Dominus Vobiscum!

This is pretty funny, I think, but I'm a little bit warped anyway. This is hysterical!! If you haven't yet tried Dr. Boli's Celebrated Magazine then you're missing out! Really!!

IT'S A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL

Linda has been wanting another bogenvia plant, and her sister and brother-in-law gave us the monetary gift of one for our anniversay, so after church we decided we would go to a nursery in Metairie and get one. This great eatery, Central American Restaurant is close by, so we decided to lunch there. It was a toss-up between sushi and central american, but this was closer, and I'd been craving it for several weeks. We've gone there on several occasions with the family, but this time it was just Linda and me. The food was, as usual, outstanding, and we left stuffed! When I was paying the bill, the waitress commented, "Your family was here earlier." Who-da thought it? Turns out Major Dad, DLG and family met KenEllie for lunch there a little bit before we got there. It really is a great restaurant! Sorry we missed everyone.

The afternoon was a success, however. We bought the plant (THANKS, PAT and BILL!!!), then picked up snowballs for Ian, BB, Molly-moo, Linda and I, and stopped by DLG's for a bit. Good times!

Tomorrow is brother Bill's birthday, so I want to wish him a very Happy Birthday!!! Bill, here is a birthday wish just for you!!
Wishing you many, many more!!!

R Wii Really That OLD????

When we first started attending Holy Name of Mary parish, oh so many years ago, we used to see a family there every Sunday. Father, mother (blonde), and two kids (blonde) maybe 3 and 5 years old. As time went on, a baby was born, then another and another. All blonde as all get out! Over the years we just referred to them as "the blonde family". Wasn't it a surprise when Linda and I went to BB's grandparents day and discovered that her teacher is the "blonde mom"!! This morning, BB tells Linda that Mrs. M (blonde mom) has been out all week so she could attend her son's graduation from "middle" school. DLG informed us that the son is graduating from MEDICAL school!! Oh... My... God... are we really that old??? They were so young and cute just a few years ago (or so it seems!!!).

C-E-L-E-B-R-A-T-E GOOD TIMES, COME ON!!

What a weekend!!! I'm getting too old for this!

Wednesday evening saw the arrival of the H2GF's parents, Bob and Irma, who came in for H2's graduation ceremony.

Thursday Linda and I spent some time with B&I and H2GF, starting with a late breakfast at IHOP. Then we ran errands in preparation for the next day's festivities.

Friday began bright and early with the badge pinning ceremony in front of Tulane University's McAllister Auditorium at 8am. The day was sunny and HOT, and the recruits were dressed in their long-sleeved shirts and ties, with bullet proof vests underneath. It had to be miserable!! Then at 9 the graduation ceremony began inside the auditorium. The ceremony lasted about 1 1/2 hours. Mayor Nagin and Councilwoman Cynthia Hedges-Morrell spoke. H2's friend Kenelly gave an address representing Recruit class 163 that was excellent!

After graduation Linda and I, H2, H2GF and B&I tried to go to lunch together, but after Corky's turned out to be closed for remodeling, Outback closed until 4PM, Linda and I headed home to finish up pre-crawfish boil errands. Unfortunately, the heat of the morning ceremonies and the lack of anything to eat triggered an especially severe migraine which took me out of commission for several hours.

The life savers that afternoon were Linda, H1/DIL1, Big Boy, and Major Dad. Linda and H1/DIL1 picked up all the slack and ran errands, picked up the crawfish (158 pounds!!) and helped with setup and preparations. Big Boy (Justin) and Major Dad boiled the mudbugs, which were perfection!!

Several of the newly sworn in officers were in attendance and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. It was especially great to have the whole family, H1/DIL1, H2/H2GF, KenEllie, Major Dad/DLG and family all together.

At one point in the evening, H2 surprised H2GF by dropping down on one knee and whipping out a little white jewelry box which contained an engagement ring. He asked her to marry him, and after a few moments of shock, surprise, tears welling up, she said "Yes"... well, technically she said, "Si", but you get the drift.

Saturday noon I had the privilege of baptizing little Charlie Dustin Farina, KenEllie's nephew. Then I had preaching duty at 5 o'clock Mass. After Mass we all (Linda and I, H1/DIL1, H2/H2F (fiancé, formerly GF), B&I, DLG and Major Dad, Ian, BB and Molly-moo went to Fujihana's for hibachi and sushi, along with a good bit of plum wine and hot saki!! Excellent!!

Sunday we said goodbye to B&I as they headed back home to TX. I preached again at 8am Mass. After Mass Linda and I, H2/H2F, and H1/DIL1 went to IHOP for breakfast, after which we had to say goodbye to H1/DIL1 as they, too, headed home to TX. At noon, another baptism, then the weekend was pretty much over.

Thank God for Mondays!! H2 is currently spending his first day on the job. I'm looking forward to getting home to hear how it went.

Thanks to everyone for their support, kind words, and best wishes for H2 and H2F. I'm sure I'll be keeping everyone posted as things progress...

In the mean time, may God continue to bless you all.

LOOKING FOR PRAYERS

Ian is in the hospital for observation for 24 hours. As some of you may know he injured his leg last weekend. He went back for a follow up today and ended up being admitted. Apparently he could need surgery. In any case, I am asking for prayers that he does not need surgery, and that he gets better quickly.

Thanks, in advance, for your prayers!!

TO DLG ON HER BIRTHDAY

Just thought I'd keep on with DIL1's theme:

May 8, 2009

WISH I'D SAID THAT

This from Fr. Dwight Longenecker:

"We celebrate Mary in May because May reminds us of Mary. The freshness, the deep down things are so alive in Mary and in May. The trees blooming and in bud, the birds chasing each other around because they are in love, the blue sky, the showers, the wet alive earth in Spring. Like Mary and May it is all alive and radiant and abundant and full of life and full of grace."

He goes on to say,

"The prayer for the May crowning says that Mary is our destiny. She shows us what we should be, shows us what we could be, shows us what we shall be if we simply follow the way, the truth and life of her Son.

Against all this the worldly old world seems so sordid and swampy and smelly and small. What, shall we indulge in the sots and thralls of lust? When we could exalt instead in the purity and power of Mary and her Son? Shall we engage ourselves in flickering screens with shallow images when we can walk in the open air and love all that is abundant in life? Shall we plunge needles in our arms, powders up our nose and bottles to our throat for cheap and degrading pleasures when we have Mary and May and all that is abundant and free and pure and radiant and good and finally full of everlasting life?

This is Catholicism. It is real. It is full. It is alive. It is abundant. It is hilarious and free and great and good.

For me... humbly trying to follow the Master, all else is illusion."

Wish I'd said that!
